What is crossfit?
Having arrived in France a few years ago, this discipline has been able to seduce by its singularity. Crossfit is a complete sport that allows you to develop both your muscle mass and your cardio. This involves a series of very high intensity exercises over a set period of time. The different exercises are varied, and mix weightlifting, weight training, fitness, athletics, gymnastics, for an ultra complete physical training that focuses on increasing your power and performance.
Balance, endurance, power, speed, precision… The different sequences develop many abilities that will allow you to burn calories in record time and give your body new strength.
What are the differences with classical bodybuilding?
Muscle training will essentially work on power and muscular strength, targeting a particular muscle or muscle groups (upper body, triceps, quadriceps etc.). It is a question of making several circuits with a number of repetitions defined according to the objectives of each one (strength, aesthetics…). Conversely, crossfit, or crosstraining, aims to boost cardio and performance by targeting a large number of muscles, your heart rate, has a very high intensity to explode calories. The duration of training is not the same either, a weight training session lasts on average 1 hour, whereas a crossfit WOD lasts on average 15 minutes.

How to choose the right crossfit book?
As with all sports, your practice will depend essentially on your objectives, your motivation and your desires. Before you start buying a book to guide you during your crossfit sessions, here are a few criteria to observe:
-
The number of WOD
The more WODs, sequences of exercises for your sessions, the less you will get bored and the more fun you will have during your workouts, while testing new exercises.
-
The quality of the explanations and illustrations
Crossfit is an intense sport, which can quickly lead to injuries if it is not practiced correctly. It is therefore important that the different exercises presented in the book are detailed and schematic, to adopt the right postures without hurting oneself.
-
The nature of the exercises
The crossfit can be practiced with different tools and materials (dumbbells, ropes, bars etc.) depending on what you have at hand, your equipment and where you practice. Make sure that the WODs offered correspond to what you have, so that you don’t get stuck with only a small part of the exercises.
-
The difficulty
The proposed exercises can be more or less complex and more or less intense. Be careful if you have just started, some exercises can be quite abrupt, there is no point in forcing or trying to train if you don’t feel able to. So, choose a crossfit book adapted to your level, you will only be able to evolve!
WOD, What does it mean ?
When we do crosstraining, we don’t talk about a workout, but about WOD, which means Workout Of the Day. A WOD alternates between 2 and 4 exercises on average, organized in a circuit based on a number of repetitions or a time of execution. So you can find WODs that alternate push-ups with burpees, and jump squats for example. The objective is to work the different muscle groups with complementary exercises for a complete and effective WOD.
What are the advantages of crossfit?
Crosstraining has many benefits, whether for your body, your health, or your mind! This discipline will develop muscular endurance, cardio, strength, flexibility and agility, all with coordination and balance. Ultra complete, you will quickly feel the difference, whether in terms of muscle mass, fat mass, and your physical condition. This sport is ideal, whether you want to gain muscle or lose weight. By boosting your cardio and your different muscles at very high intensity, crossfit stimulates your blood flow, destroys muscle fibres and explodes calories, for a better oxygenated, healthier and much more resistant and powerful body.
Where and how to practice it?
You can practice crossfit both indoors (called BOX for crosstraining) and at home. The advantage of doing it in a Box is that you will have all the necessary equipment at your disposal for optimal and varied WOD to push your performance and not get tired. However, saying you can’t do it because you don’t have a crossfit room nearby is a bad excuse! Even without equipment or with very little (a few weights for example), you can practice WOD at body weight, which will not stop you from sweating, straining your muscles and burning calories.
The WOD is not the only key point of your training, it is necessary to respect three steps for an optimal session without injuries:
- Preparation: you will have to start your training with warm-ups. Crossfit is an intense sport, which can strain muscles if they are not properly prepared. Therefore, it is necessary to warm up the warm-ups dynamically with movements similar to those of the WOD, but without weight or intensity.
- The WOD: now you can get into your WOD to sweat it out! Make sure you have good control of your front movements so you don’t hurt yourself.
- Stretching: gently, loosen your muscles, relax them, and soothe your heart rate for a good recovery. Stretch the muscles you’re working on well to loosen up and minimize muscle soreness.
If you are new to crossfit, be careful when you first start WOD, respect the times or repetitions without trying to go further, at the risk of exhausting yourself very quickly or hurting yourself. It is best to get coaching or advice at the beginning, to adopt the right postures and techniques. Cross-country skiers are part of a great community, so don’t hesitate to help each other!
Where to buy a crossfit book?

Online, you will discover a few copies on Amazon, Rakuten or Cdiscount.
