The operation of an Italian electric coffee maker is extremely simple, based on the same principle as that of a kettle: an electric base on which the coffee maker rests, which allows the water to be heated for the preparation of coffee. Some require a warm-up time, but for most current models, two minutes is enough to make coffee. As for the rest, the electric model works in the same way as the classic Moka coffeemaker, with the difference that you have to press a button to start the brewing process: simmering water in the bottom compartment, ground coffee above with a suitable grind, the permanent filter in the middle so that everything brews and that’s it! Coffee goes up to the top compartment, ready to be poured. The advantage of Italian electric coffee makers is the possibility of having a “keep coffee warm” function for a certain period of time. Attention, the capacity of Italian coffee makers, even electric ones, is reduced: it is essential to pay attention to the level of water poured on some models to avoid overflowing from the spout when the coffee rises!

The power
Minimum 300 W: that’s what your coffee maker needs to be efficient. While most advanced models easily exceed this power level, this is not the case for all add-on appliances, for example. If you want to buy a Moka electric coffee maker for secondary use, make sure you choose a real appliance, not a gadget more for decoration than for making a real aromatic coffee.
The capacity
Traditionally, the Italian coffee maker has a small capacity, and with good reason: only half of their body contains the finished coffee. Most electric models are no exception: 2 to 6 cups announced on average, but we’re talking about very short and very tight coffee, so these are small cups. For larger consumers, some manufacturers have designed Italian electric coffee makers with a capacity of up to 10 cups.
The materials
You may be tempted by a nice little affordable model, but if it’s a little too affordable compared to the competition, take a look at the materials of construction to make sure that the interior of the coffeemaker is made of stainless steel, not metal or other materials. In fact, apart from its durability and solidity, stainless steel requires little maintenance and avoids the persistent formation of calcareous residues that can alter the quality and flavour of espresso coffee. Aluminum can also be a good component, but its strength is a little less. Pay extra attention to the body material if you’re looking for an insulated coffee maker, as some retain more heat than others.

The Moka coffee makers of the Italian brand Bialetti are a bit like the Rolls-Royce of the Italian coffee maker market: good materials, an efficient configuration for a very aromatic coffee and a pleasantly typical and tasteful design, much sought-after by coffee lovers, have contributed to their success among true insiders of traditional Moka. This equally cute electric version with its digital display was a real favourite with our panel of testers, because in addition to the look, it has a high degree of performance: programmer with automatic switch-off, audible on/off signal, keeping the coffee hot, cold base… All these features quickly add to the already high price of Bialetti coffee: for such a price, the quality is there and the coffee is delicious, but the investment is not the same as with the competition: the price is almost double!

Our testers immediately fell in love with this adorable coffeemaker with its well thought-out design, optimised weight and the best value for money. The little extra that pleases: the coffee brewing disc supplied with the filter to adjust the intensity of the coffee to the desired level. The plastic upper part combined with an electrical resistance prevents the coffee from overheating once filtered, thus preserving the purity of its flavour, unlike some models where the metal head can cause this overheating effect which affects the taste. The only downside: its capacity is closer to 2 cups than 4.
